What is the absolute pressure at the bottom of the container?
Q. A container is filled to a depth of 10.2 cm with water. On top of the water floats a 48.5 cm thick layer of oil with specific gravity 0.668. What is the absolute pressure at the bottom of the container? The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s^2. Answer in units of Pa.

A. Absolute pressure = weight of air + weight of oil + weight of water, all per unit area. The weight of the air is just the atmospheric pressure at the place and time. That's about 10^5 pascals. For the oil, the volume is 48.5 cc per cm^2, which translates to (48.5)(0.668) grams/cm^2. But for the result in pascals, we want the units to be N/m^2 so convert this to kg/m^2. To get the force, multiply by the acceleration of gravity Repeat the process with the 0.102 meters of water. Then sum.

A. An absolute monarch makes the rules and makes sure they are kept. The King of Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarch, as is the Sultan of Brunai and the Pope (yes, he rules Vatican City).

What are the rules to multiplying absolute values?
Q. For example, if I have a+b+c |2a + bc | Before I add up a, b and c, I first multiply c x 2a and c x bc, right? The lines for absolute value should be treated as parenthesis and PEMDAS should be followed, right?
Asked by 1two3 - Tue Aug 28 21:17:05 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, absolute value should be treated as a set of "special" parentheses. Do all of your work inside the absolute value markers, then apply the absolute value, and finally you can multiply by c.
